Dromtarriffe v Glanmire

Dull clouds embarked on Mallow for the opening game of the IAFC for both Dromtarriffe and Glanmire. An early powerful high shot from Evan Murphy wasn’t to be stopped from hitting the back of the net giving Dromtarriffe a dream start within a minute from thrown in.

Murphy pointed a ‘45 but this was to be soon matched as free for Glanmire and a goal from play certainly sparked an entertaining first 10 minutes with both sides raising the flags.

Dromtarriffe seemed to lose their shape as continuous pressure from Glanmire was forced on the Dromtarriffe backs put Glanmire up 2 in the first quarter.

With both sides going through a spell of not scoring, 2 points from Murphy and from Conor O Callaghan respectively kept the scoreboard ticking for Dromtarriffe and the gap smaller against their opponents.

Mistakes were coming easy for both sides but Glanmire threatened more for scores and missed opportunities to raise the green flag to increase the gap.

With minutes to go before the Half Time whistle, the Dromtarriffe management made a change that certainly impacted the Dromtarriffe side as their spirits lifted, and they attacked more finishing off the half strong with a point from Daniel O Keeffe just on the whistle and both sides level at 1-07 each.

With the weather turning messy, neither side wanted to concede early in the second half but this is exactly what happened to Dromtarriffe, a goal from glanmire within 30 seconds and another soon followed putting them up 5 points. There was still a long way to go in the game but there was a feeling amongst the crowd that with the start Glanmire had, it would surely be hard to come back.

But a determined Dromtarriffe side with link play from O Keeffe, O Callaghan and Murphy was the start of a magical moment for Darren O Connor as he raised the green flag and that 5 point lead was taken away as frees converted from Dromtarriffe had the sides back level.

A double substitution from Dromtarriffe that not many in the crowd noticed saw Con O Callaghan and Mark O Connor come on, but it was Marks point that had Dromtarriffe out in front since the start of the match.

Excellent work from O Keeffe, O Callaghan and Adam Buckley kept Dromtarriffe alive and the game was starting to swing in Dromtarriffe favour. Unfortunately for Glanmire, their midfielder was shown a second yellow and there was a long 15 minutes left for them.

Corner back, Mark Dennehy hit between the posts and another goal, this time from Mark O Connor was surely the game sealed as Dromtarriffe started to dominate as they lead by 6 points.

But that wasn’t the case, silly mistakes from one to fifteen for Dromtarriffe gave glanmire a glimmer of hope with minutes remaining and they reduced it to 3 points. They were threatening for a goal and in fairness, when it got scrappy and tough, Dromtarriffes backs defended well. A free out to Jack Murphy seemed to be a sense of relief for Dromtarriffe as it lead to an attack that saw Evan Murphy pop over a free and get the victory. Full Time Score Dromtarriffe: 3-14(23) Glanmire: 3-10(19)
